The Story of the Sand Dollar
One September evening in Florida, there was a terrible rainstorm that lasted throughout the evening…
The next morning, once the sun had risen, a young boy and his grandfather decided to see how the beach had faired after the torrential downpour the night before. The young boy and his grandfather began their walk down the beach and saw that the storm had washed up thousands of Sand Dollars. They both were very cautious as they walked along.
Every few steps the grandfather was picking up one Sand Dollar and tossing it into the ocean. The young boy was very confused. Why, he thought, was his grandfather picking up only one and leaving the others. So finally, he asked, “Why?” The grandfather sweetly responded, “Well...All of these Sand Dollars are living creatures and they will all die here on the beach if they don't get back in the water.” Now, the grandson was even more confused! He asked, “Why would you bother, there are thousands of them, you can't help them all?” In which the grandfather simply smiled, gently picked up a Sand Dollar, and said to his grandson, “But I can help this one!”
The young boy now understood, he took the Sand Dollar from his grandfather's hand, walked to the edge of the ocean, and gently tossed it into the water. The young boy then returned to his grandfather's side, held his hand and they finished their walk down the beach.
Many Sand Dollars were saved that day by the kindness of a young boy and his grandfather! |
